Lisa Dyer is an adolescent and family counsellor and saw how a lot of young people were struggling long after the waters had subsided. They've all got very different personalities. Everyone opened up their homes and their hearts and their lounge rooms and their spare bed, and everyone was supported and cared for.Įven with the town working together, it soon became clear that recovery wasn't going to happen quickly. It rallied in a way that was just beautiful. That house that's about to just go under the bridge and down the creek.Īs manager of the town's community centre, Sarah U'Brien quickly found herself at the heart of the recovery effort. Putting feet on the ground and being in waist height water… terrified. Four were swept away, and three people lost their lives. You can't conceive how it got there and you can't conceive the damage that could do in such a quick period of time. ![]() And here's this creek that after 166 mLs of rain fell in two hours, was suddenly above this bridge here. One of the things with the flood is it can seem so unlikely if you revisit the spot. You wouldn't know it now, but in 2015, this creek was Ground Zero for what's been described as a once in a thousand year weather event. This is Dungog, nestled in the rolling hills of the Hunter region in New South Wales. ![]()
